Ahmet Atilla (1914-2008), Horticulturist

Ahmet Atilla (1914-2008) was head gardener in the Botanical Garden of İstanbul University for 20 years between 1944 and 1964. He was an agriculturist. He has been a plant collector. He accompanied the researchers of the Botanical Institute (Istanbul University, Faculty of Science) and reknown foreign collectors in their Anatolian travels, procured herbarium material for ISTF and also fresh native material, mainly geophytes, in order to grow and propagate them in the University's botanical garden. He was with Ord.Prof.Dr. A.Heilbronn in 1947 in Northeast Anatolia. In 1949, he participated to the third Anatolian visit of P.H. Davis. In 1950, he assisted A.Huber-Morath in his fifth Anatolian travel. Between 1971 and 1984, he accompanied Prof.Dr. T.Baytop in eight of his Anatolian expeditions. Flora of Turkey cites ca. 60 of his specimens which are collected between 1947 and 1961 from 20 provinces. His specimens are kept in ISTF. A research in this herbarium may tell about the size of his collection. He has also specimens housed in E, K, and Hb.Hub.-Mor. He collected 4 types jointly with P.H. Davis and K.Bilger (later K. Karamanoğlu). Two species have been named after him: Alkanna attilae (Boraginaceae) and Gladiolus attilae (Iridaceae). The botanical literature writes his name as Attila.

Ahmet Atilla (1914-2008), İstanbul Üniversitesi Fen Fakültesi Botanik Bahçesi'nde, 1944-1964 yılları arasında 20 yıl bahçe şefi olarak çalışmış bir ziraatçidir. Bağlı olduğu Enstitü'deki araştırmacıların, ünlü yabancı bitki toplayıcılarının Anadolu gezilerine katılmış, bitki örnekleri toplamış, bu arada Anadolu bitkilerinden üretici materyel, başlıca geofıtlerden soğan, rizom vs. toplayarak onları Botanik Bahçesi'nde yetiştirmiş ve üretmiştir. 1947'de, Ord.Prof.Dr. A. Heilbronn ile Kuzeydoğu Anadolu yöresinde gezmiş; 1949'da P.H. Davis'in üçüncü Anadolu gezisine katılmış; 1950'de A. Huber-Morath'nın beşinci Anadolu gezisinde onunla birlikte dolaşmıştır. 1971-1989 yılları arasında, Prof. Dr. T. Baytop'un sekiz Anadolu gezisine katılmıştır. Flora of Turkey'de, A. Atilla'nın 60 kadar örneği kayıtlıdır. A. Atilla, 1947-1961 arasında Anadolu'nun 20 ilinden örnek toplamıştır. Örnekleri, İstanbul Üniversitesi Fen Fakültesi Herbaryumu'nda (ISTF) saklıdır. Ancak bu herbaryumda yapılacak bir araştırma, onun bitki koleksiyonunun hacmi hakkında bir fikiı verebilir. E, K ve Hb.Hub.-Mor.'da da örnekleri vardır. Flora of Turkey'de, onun P.H. Davis ve K. Bilger (sonradan K. Karamanoğlu) ile topladığı 4 tipörneği kayıtlıdır. İki tür adı ona ithaf edilmiştir: Alkanna attilae (Boraginaceae) ve Gladiolus attilae (Iridaceae). Botanik literatüründe adı Attila şeklinde yerleşmiştir.
